Congratulations! You’re planning a wedding! I’m so excited to share this post today because one of my favorite parts about the wedding planning process has been creating picture perfect, aesthetically pleasing wedding mood boards that match my palette.

If you are in the early stages of wedding planning, you may be thinking about how you’re going to style your day. I started the second I got engaged. This can be an overwhelming feeling as there are a variety of options.

WHAT IS A WEDDING MOOD BOARD?

What on earth is a mood board? Simply put, a mood board is a visual representation of all the inspiration you’ve gathered for your wedding days. It’s taking colors and sometimes textures that you want on your special day and meshing them together to create an entire board you can easily refer to. The board should make you feel emotional, excited and happy. You should be able to create a board and show your vendors so they know exactly how to help make your vision come to life on your big day! It should encapsulate the vision, smell and taste of the day as well.

WHY DO I NEED A MOOD BOARD?

  • During the several months of planning, your head will bounce all over the place with ideas. One day you want one thing, the next day you might change your mind. A mood board will help keep your most loved visions on track. You will then have the ability to say no to other ideas that will take you away form your most loved vision. If you stumble upon something that you like but it isn’t quite the same as your other ideas, ask yourself: “Does this have the feeling and atmosphere I’m going for? Or do I just like it because it’s pretty”. You’ll have an easier time saying no this way!
  • A mood board will allow you to share your vision and concept with everyone from friends, family and more importantly, your wedding vendors. In particular, I’ve found that the color palette and mood board were most important for your planner, florist and invitation designers. However, most vendors will ask you if you’ve created an inspiration board that you can send to them. It helps everyone work in unison to keep your big day on track.

HOW DO I CREATE A MOOD BOARD?

Before you jump into looking at thousands of Pinterest photos, set aside some time to come up with a few keywords that will describe what you want for your day. Consider the time of the year you’ll be getting married and where your venue will be. A barn wedding has a much different aesthetic than an estate or backyard wedding. To give you some ideas, here are the keywords I would use to describe my upcoming wedding:

Fairytale, Romantic Estate Wedding, Ethereal, Pink Wedding Florals, October Wedding, Pink Wedding Favors, Peach and Pink Wedding Palette, French Chateau Wedding.

Our wedding venue is an estate, but the reception on property is a barn, so I have the ability to create different styles if I’d like. However, in order to save myself from jumping all over the place, I kept my theme very consistent. Just because the reception is in a barn, does not mean it can’t be fairytale, ethereal and romantic.

Once you have a collection of words, colors and venue ideas, you can start searching Pinterest for inspiration! The easiest way to keep each part of your day organized on Pinterest is to create one large “Wedding” board and then add sections to it. For example, I labeled my sections as such: “Details, Ceremony, Cake, Hair, Bridesmaids, Groomsmen, Venue Decor, Table Settings, First Look Ideas, Signage, Wedding Favors, etc”.

For most people, the easiest way to create mood boards is via Pinterest. However, if you’d like to create a mood board collage like the one I created above, there are some free websites and apps you can use. Since I’m a graphic designer and brand strategist, I personally create everything on Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop. For those who want it simple, try these out:

  1. Canva
  2. Be Funky
  3. Live Collage (phone app)
  4. Layout from Instagram (phone app)

Now that you’ve put together all your images, it’s time to look back at your board and ask yourself if everything blends and looks consistent. If your wedding is pink, white and peach, you wouldn’t want to have other random colors mixed in. At the end of the day, the most important thing is that you feel happy and confident in what you’ve chosen for your special day. You want to be a blushing bride who will have the wedding of her dreams!
