This has been a highly requested blog post ever since I shared a sneak peek of our Modern Boho Farmhouse Living Room Reveal on Instagram stories recently. I’m so excited to finally share it! You might remember my Boho Living Room Reveal from when we lived in San Diego. While I preferred that design style better, I had to compromise with my husband who wasn’t a fan of everything being pink and tropical, haha! I guess can you blame him? He is a man after all! That being said, we had to find an in between of both of our likes and interests so we combined farmhouse and bohemian together and this is the final product. I have to admit I was a bit frustrated with the room until we found the BEST rug ever from Ruggable. Now, I think the room looks beautiful and cohesive!
Using a Rug to Piece a Living Room Together
After decorating a variety of rooms in both homes we’ve lived in and helping friends with theirs, I’ve come to realize that a rug can really pull an entire space together. It’s the true centerpiece that can make a room pop and bring out matching colors. I can’t even tell you how THRILLED I am about our Ruggable rug! The BEST part is that it is MACHINE WASHABLE. Say what?! Yes. You can throw this rug directly into your washing machine in the event of drops, spills, animal hair, etc. We don’t have kids yet, but I know I’ll be a long time customer of Ruggable since we won’t have to worry about what types of messes occur once we have a baby. My friend has dogs and she owns 7 Ruggable rugs! She swears by them and says she won’t buy another rug brand ever again! We chose to go with the Moroccan Diamond Plush Rug in the 6×9 size. This size fit our couch and rattan coffee table area perfectly. It’s incredibly soft, non-slip and the geometric design makes it unique! I also think it matches any bohemian or farmhouse room wonderfully.
Each Ruggable rug comes with a rug pad to lay underneath so it stays in place and won’t slip – this is especially important if you’re using the rug on a hardwood floor or have kids and dogs who run around the house. It’s a win-win in my book. I even got an extra one for under our dining room table – stay tuned for a dedicated blog post on that! USE CODE FUNJENMARIE10 for 10% off your Ruggable order!
When we first moved in last September, it was impossible to find a couch. I mean, i m p o s s i b l e . With Covid, all the couches were on backorder for 3-6+ months, we couldn’t see them in stores to try them out and we were left with only a few options. We actually got pretty lucky when we stumbled across this oatmeal colored couch from World Market. It was smaller than what we wanted, but for the way the room was setup, we thought it would go perfectly. Once we buy our own home, we’ll have the space to buy a large L-shaped couch.
If you’ve been seeing the decor trends lately, you might have caught on to the popularity of rattan. I honestly LOVE rattan and wicker. It was around in my mom’s house when I was younger, but now it’s come back in with an even more modern and elegant vibe to it. We went through THREE coffee tables before settling on this one from Target. It’s sturdy and the warm wood matches the rest of the room.
The Entryway Table
This entryway table from World Market was one of my best purchases to date. Right now it’s on sale for under $300! It’s definitely popular as I’ve seen it all over Pinterest! It comes in both a dark and white wood wash. I wanted this table to be functional, but not full of pieces cluttering it up. I try to keep our space minimal, bright and airy so it doesn’t feel cluttered. I grabbed a few baskets from Target, added pillows, set out candles, a tray and some faux greenery to go with some of the other real plants in our living room. The wood mirror made the whole wall come together. We replaced the gold one we had since this matched better and was a little larger.
Bookshelf Styling
You might remember the Hemnes Entertainment Center from Ikea on my last living room blog post! We took this piece with us when we moved from California because it’s an absolute staple in our living room. This time around, I style the shelves with neutral books, picture frames, succulents and baskets. Baskets are always a good idea in any room. It’s a way to hide away clutter and pull it out whenever you need it.
As I mentioned earlier, I really like to keep things as minimal as possible while still looking pretty. In the space to the left of the entertainment center, we had a chair that I LOVED, but Matt found it to be uncomfortable so out it went, haha! Instead, we replaced it with the most beautiful boho pot and faux palm plant. The sunburst wall mirror above it added another touch of boho to our room.
Pairing Warm Woods with Black and Whites
Bohemian styles typically have tan, neutral colors along with warm or white washed woods. Farmhouse decor has a lot of the same if you choose to go with more of a rustic look. On the other hand, you likely know modern farmhouse as being described as black and white. Our goal for this living room was to have a mix and match of both. It sure wasn’t easy but I think we pulled it off (at least until I get bored and change it up again – you know me!).
We used black and wood frames, tan baskets and shelving (Matt’s brother actually made the shelf by the door himself – a hobby he picked up during quarantine) to make the idea come to life.
Our front door was already black, so I thought that matched the farmhouse theme pretty well. I found a beautiful faux boxwood wreath to brighten it up from Home Goods. You can always find something at Home Goods, am I right?! It took about 6 months to figure out what to put next to the door. We knew we wanted shelves or somewhere to put shoes on upon walking in. Of course, I wanted to hide them so I put a few in the baskets (see, baskets are great for everything!) and the rest go in the entryway closet.
The photos and frames above the shelving unit are some of my favorite! I got them from Poster Store, my FAVORITE place to get prints. They’re beautiful, high quality and they have something for everyone. The middle photo is from Yosemite, our favorite National Park! You can use CODE: 35Love to get 35% off all posters until May 31st.
Lastly, the little sea basket shelf nook behind the couch is just an area to store things we use daily like keys, tape, scissors, bags, masks and sanitizers. We hung some photos we took while in California there. The ONLY thing we still need in our house now is our framed wedding photos and a wedding album. Can anyone recommend a good company?
Overall, we’re really happy with our living room. It works for the size we have, but I’m sure as soon as we move in a year or two we’ll be switching things out again. I LOVE decorating so it’s not a hassle for me, just fun projects! I hope you guys enjoyed this post! Don’t forget to USE CODE FUNJENMARIE10 for 10% off your Ruggable order!
